Well-thought initiative vs. absurd initiative

In Montpellier (France), the local authorities have decided to prohibit cabs from using the new bus lanes, as long as bikes do not have their own dedicated lanes. This creates an absurd and dangerous precedent both for our society and the cab industry.

It’s absurd because it solves a marginal problem (there are not that many cabs driving on the bus lanes) while strongly affecting a practical and fast solution for those who would have decided to give up on their car.
On the contrary, resorting to a taxi rather than using a self-owned car should always be advantaged. Cabs are part of the solution, not part of the problem.

It’s dangerous for our colleagues in Montpellier and it is a risky precedent for the rest of the industry.
Now that we know it can happen, let’s all make sure that such an incomprehensible initiative won’t take place in our territory.

On the other hand, in Brussels, the government is working on the extension of the Bruxell’Air grant, made for the individuals giving up their car. This grant can now be used to rsort to a wide range of mobility solutions, beyond public transport and cycling. This time, cabs are included and the number of potential beneficiaries should triple.
We can only welcome this well-thought initiative which deserves to be spread.

A well-thought initiative, an absurd initiative: our voices must participate in turning the situation around, cabs are part of the solution, not part of the problem.

TRANSFORMATION PLAN

In April, we’ve presented a transformation plan for one of our clients in the cab industry. Objective: rethink the offer and the market positioning in order to develop a sustainable business model. To achieve this work, we took into consideration the Relevance – Feasibility – Acceptability approach that we presented to you in last March’s newsletter.

THE FLEETIZEN FEATURES OF THE MONTH

DRIVER HEATMAP

Positioning aid taking into account radio and street trips

fter a few weeks of hard work, Fleetizen is proud to provide its customers with the new “Driver Heatmap”, a assistant to positioning, that takes into account demand and supply.

The heatmap displays 2 critical pieces of information per zone: the average waiting time and the number of drivers waiting for a ride.

Correctly processed, the average waiting time per zone sums up many variables: rides ordered through your services, hailed rides, number of drivers present, etc.

WHAT DO TAXI FLEETS CURRENTLY LOOK FOR ?

In these troubled times for our cab business, let’s take a look at the main  solutions that taxi fleets are looking for. We can rely on the very interesting “Annual mobility survey 2020” report by Mobiq, a consulting firm specialized in mobility,

Mobiq considers that 30% of the historical taxi and ride-hailing industry market will be difficult to recover post-covid. It is therefore necessary for each taxi company to reinvent its offer to grow the customer base and increase the wallet share.

Taxi fleets are primarily looking for solutions that will assist them in expanding the service offer, following the current trends in ecology or improving the customer experience:

  • electric vehicles
  • fleet management systems
  • dispatch systems
  • sharing economy platforms

This list tackles the importance of the customer relationship and the brand image in boosting the activity of taxi fleets.

MOBILITY PRESS REVIEW

Hundreds of yellow-and-black taxi cabs disrupted traffic in Barcelona on Thursday against the return of Uber after a 2-year hiatus.

Uber has been operating once again in Barcelona since mid-March, but only as a regular taxi service – not as a ride-hailer

– Uber clash after the recent decision by Brussels to forbid drivers to use their smartphones to receive ride offers.

– Baidu, China’s leading search engine, is often compared to Google. And just as Google has spun off Waymo to commercialize self-driving technology. The Chinese search giant announced the launch of what it is calling China’s first paid autonomous vehicle service, known as Apollo Go. The service is better described as a shuttle service than a taxi service; customers are picked up and dropped off from one of eight predefined stations.

– Travellers entering Canada by land aren’t required to check into a quarantine hotel. To avoid the hotel quarantine, some snowbirds are flying to U.S. cities close to the Canadian border — such as Buffalo, N.Y. —and then hiring a ground transport service — such as Buffalo Limousine — to drive them across the Canadian border.
